The Best Storage Stratgies

Four things to think about before installing a cool room

by Elaine Johnson

Cool rooms are vital for a number of businesses, such as restaurants or pharmacies. Before installing your cool room, you need to take a number of things into consideration.

Purpose

Not all cool rooms are the same. Before you decide on the size and layout of your cool room, you need to consider its function. The kinds of things that will be stored in the room will decide its individual character. If you are storing meat and fish, for example, you will need a room that is arranged in such a way that they will not contaminate other foodstuffs and can be kept at a constant temperature. You may also need to be able to control the humidity in the cool room if you are storing items such as medicines. All of this needs to be considered at the outset.

Size

The next thing to consider is how large the room should be. You need a room that is big enough to contain your stock, but not so big that you are paying to refrigerate an empty space. However, you should also consider if your business will grow and you will need more storage. It is cheaper to future-proof your storage by installing a larger room at the outset rather than replacing it or adding another later on.

Accessibility

Thirdly, think about how your staff will get in and out of the room. You can save space inside the room by using sliding doors, but the room itself will still need to be laid out so that people can move around and find what they need. Your cool room will need to be located near to where the stock is needed to save your staff long journeys to collect a few items. You should also consider whether there will need to be any vehicular access to the room.

Shelving

Finally, make sure you know how much shelving and other furniture you need in the room. You will need to plan this in order to work out how much stock the room will hold, and how easy it will be to move around. If the level or type of stock is likely to vary, you should consider getting mobile shelving so that the room can be rearranged as things change.

The key to a successful cool room is good planning. Just talk to your installer about your requirements and they will help to ensure that your room is ideal for your purposes.
